Teacher, Author, Associate Professor

I have worked in primary schools in the UK and Spain for over twenty years as a class-teacher, senior leader and deputy head teacher.  I am passionate about art, drama and science and my varied professional roles allow me to pass on my experience, enthusiasm and skills to teachers and children alike.

As an educational consultant I enjoy working with teachers and children on art, drama and science in primary settings across the United Kingdom and internationally. Sessions can be run online or face-to-face.

My position as an Associate Professor in Learning and Teaching at The University of Hertfordshire provides me with the opportunity to lead innovative educational projects. I am also the Professional Lead for art and science in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Education, where I enjoy teaching these subjects to the undergraduate and postgraduate trainee primary school teachers.

I am an author and my publications include an award winning children's book called 'Superhero Scientists' and a teacher resource text entitled 'Science meets English'.

I play an active role in the science education sector nationally, presenting at national conferences and engaging with developments at a senior level.

I am fully cleared to work in schools and hold a current Disclosure and Barring Certificate, as well as having Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Success Stories

David provided an engaging and creative project that was appropriately challenging and inspiring. During the workshops, our pupils covered a wide range of skills, such as observation, sketching, understanding tone, shade, tint, as well as clay working and painting with acrylics. Through a range of activities, David encouraged the development of their pre-existing art skills, whilst also teaching them new techniques.

His enthusiasm and passion was infectious. Once one session was over, the children could not wait to begin the next. With David's help and guidance, our children produced amazing artwork. The workshops were the highlight of their final year in primary.

I would highly recommend David to any school looking to help enrich their art and science curriculum.

John Robb - Key Stage 2 Lead, Ascot Road Primary School

“THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH for yesterday's Drama Science CPD training session! It was genuinely brilliant – I even got the children hot-seating this morning as stars in the different stages of their lives! I really found it inspirational!

Chloe Davies - Assistant Head, Pembridge Hall School

Superhero Scientists is the perfect book for the KS2 classroom. It enables children to connect with the world of science, the scientists, their discoveries and the impact they have made. All subjects need lessons in reading and Superhero Scientists helps to develop cross curricular literacy.

The 'Meet the Author' event provided some much needed brightness during the darker days of the pandemic. David was able to bring to life the stories of the diverse collection of scientists and increase knowledge of the careers that depend on science. It was also the perfect opportunity to learn about the process an author  goes through from idea to book publishing. Children were so motivated to carry on their learning outside of school creating their own Superhero Scientists in the community. A fantastic event with a lasting legacy.

Mike Cooke - Headteacher, Plymouth Grove Primary School
